It is written, “I believed therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak. II Corinthians 4:13
Susie Larson in her book “Your Powerful Prayers,” shares a time in her life when she battled insomnia in the worst way, and yet also had three small sons. One day when they were crabby and out of sorts, and she was “so tired my skin hurt,” she walked by a mirror and saw herself. Pathetic. The worst version of herself. Bed-head. Baggy-eyed. Brain-fogged. She wanted to cry but then she sensed God inviting her to trust Him—not only with the surface parts of her that she could barely stand to acknowledge, but also the deepest parts that still needed healing and wholeness. Incredibly, something rose up within her, and she said this prayer out loud:
“Lord, even here, even now, I belong to You. Despite my bleary eyes and messy hair, I’m still Your treasure. Your child. This is true because You say it’s true. So I speak it out loud for my own ears to hear, and I choose to believe it until my heart fully knows it. Thank You, thank You for valuing me. I wrap my arms around Your grace. I seek You in this difficult place. And I will finish my race, because You promised to get me safely home. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
Sometimes our ears need to hear our mouths say truths that God declared in His Word, because it strengthens us. And it reminds us that we are not who we were. We are not what we do. We are not how we feel that day—or even look! We are someone God delights in and enjoys. We are His treasure!
We are all going to walk through storms, and we struggle to find our footing. No matter the reason for the storm, sometimes we respond in ways that are beneath us. We’ll say things we wish we hadn’t, or know we shouldn’t have. That’s when we need to stop and remember that we need a Savior. And praise God, we have one! It helps to remind ourselves that we can walk in His promises, not because we’re perfect but because He is!
*Right now what is the promise of God that you need to stop and remember and choose to say out loud?
Father, I belong to You. I am Your treasure. I wrap myself around Your grace and cling to the promise that You will carry me and sustain me and walk with me through this difficult place. Thank You for valuing me. I choose to believe it until my heart fully knows it. In Jesus lovely name I pray, Amen.
