What 5 things do I treasure?

When we visited Saint Simons Island, when my youngest, Anden, was six- years old, we walked along looking for shells on the beach. Saving beached hermit crabs by throwing them back into the ocean with his best pitching throw, we looked for a shell without a creature living inside of it. The uninhabited shells were few and far between on this particular week, yet we found a few. Running in the sand, Anden thought, he had found a beautiful shell- a treasure. Upon examination of the shell, I told him it was broken. With serious grin, he stated, “Mom, I like broken treasures!”

His simple statement echoes in my head days later, as if God is reminding me. “I like broken treasures.”

Often, we think that we must “get our act together” to be likeable to God. As if, we must do more, be more, give more… before our Creator treasures us. Yet the “doing” can leave us exhausted and empty. All the while the Creator is calling us, Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. (Matthew 11:28-30 The Message)

This week, as we walked along the beach again, God reminded me, I love “broken treasures, so bring Me your brokenness, your pain, your weariness, your longing, your worries…bring Me your troubled heart, for you are My special treasure.”

May we find great peace in knowing we are precious to the heart of God. He treasures us! Because of His magnificent love and heart of compassion, we can come to Him with our imperfections, our mess, our brokenness, for He loves broken treasures.

Knowing you are treasured, at times do you still feel broken?

God,Thank you that You love broken treasures, for that is me. I invite You in to my brokenness, my mess, my worries, my fears, my pain, my tiredness…revive my spirit in the realization that You love me right where I am- not where I feel like I should be. You know me so deeply and love me completely, may this motivate me to live wrapped in Your love, so that I can give, grow, dream, heal…live the life that You have for me. In Jesus name

“God chose you out of all the people on Earth as his cherished personal treasure.” (Deuteronomy 14:2 The Message Bible)
