“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matthew 5:14-15 NIV)
A dear friend gave me the gift of peace. The fragrant, Peace-scented soy candle has become one of my favorites to light. In my sometimes messy and cluttered home, there is something so tranquil about the aroma of this candle filling my house. There is nothing magical or spiritual about these candles, they simply help create an inviting atmosphere that I enjoy. Last month was a time of battling for my peace, so I bought two of these candles. I found myself begging God to give me peace.
Unfortunately, I misplaced my lighter. For days I looked for it and forgot to purchase a new one. No lighter meant I couldn’t fully enjoy the scent of my Peace candle. In my search, I thought about Jesus—the light of the world. Upon giving our life to Jesus, His light lives inside of us. So, unlike my candle, we never completely burn out. Yet if we are relying on our own strength, we can often feel burned out. Without the flame to ignite the wick, my candle was useless to do what it was made to do.
Without being filled daily with the love of Jesus, it is exhausting and impossible to live the life we were created to live. We need the light, His light.
In the quiet with a journal, a cup of coffee, and a verse from the Word, there in that place whispering a prayer, inviting Jesus in, the light inside is ignited and restored to do what it was created to do. Miracles happen inside of us when we seek Him. The Light of the World creates a fire inside of us with His great love. When we are lit with His flame, His light and love, through us, can shine on those around us!
Self Reflection:
- What would embracing peace look like for me?
- Do I have a place or practice that brings peace into my life?
Prayer:
Jesus, I need You to touch my heart, soul, and mind with the power of Your love. Only then can I live shining Your love, joy, and peace to the world around me. I invite You to continually touch my life with Your presence. In Jesus’ name.
