“And this (salvation) is not of yourselves (of our own doing, it came not through your own striving).” (Ephesians 2:8)
Waiting and accepting the gift of His grace and direction is a big part of the Christian life. He calls us to be still, to find ourselves at rest in Him, to give Him all of the things that keep us striving. I was challenged to give Him the swirl, my restlessness, the things I think I need to strive for, and entrust them all into His care, His timing, His favor, His grace.
I am a striver. If something needs to happen, I jump in to make it happen. Moving is much more comfortable than resting or waiting. Recently, the verse, “Be still and know that I am God,” was what I felt like God was telling me to do. Be still… that’s it. Every time I sit still my husband, Dan, checks my temperature. Be still? There is way too much to do to be still! Yet, because I know God is always right, I tried to be still.
In 2018, I wrote in my journal, “I was chewing on this verse for two days and then sure enough I got a sign in the sky. (Not really, but still a big sign.) My daughter and I were in the Dollar Tree. Because “peace” is the spiritual fruit I am trying to embrace this year, she picked up a cross with the word “peace” on it. Giggling, she gave it to me, ‘Mom, this is what you need.’
Sure enough Psalms 46:10 was written on the cross, ‘Be still and know that I am God.’
I laughed and told Addi that God had been reminding me of that verse for two days, I guess He is really trying to tell me something!”
Self Reflection:
- What does “Be still and know that I am God” mean to you?
- What would applying this verse in your life look like?
- Where do you need grace and peace?
Prayer:
Jesus, I choose You. I choose to find myself still before You and rest. Forgive my striving and constant motion. Help me to give you my restlessness and my desires in exchange for Your grace and peace. In Jesus’ name.
