“Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy for our failures) and find grace to help in good time for every need (appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it.)” (Hebrews 4:16 AMP)

The throne of grace. God could have called the throne anything, yet grace is the word He chose to describe this great throne. “God’s unmerited (or undeserved) favor” is what we are promised. Grasping this truth has taken decades. I learned this phrase at sixteen and am still learning more about His incredible grace.

Long ago, God led me in my prayer time to start taking people there, to the throne of grace. In my mind, I picture this grand and glorious pedestal. I bow before it, with my friend or family member, and pray for them. Envisioning the throne and its grandeur instantly made my requests seems small and God’s power to provide so amazing. In exchange for my request, He gives me peace. The more I visit this place in my prayers, I sense God smiling. I believe that asking God for help and spending time with Him makes Him smile.

As we go to the throne, we must be aware that God never speaks anything contradicting His Word. So if that happens, our imagination has gone a little too far and gotten off track. We can simply get back on the right path by saying, “In Jesus’ name, I bind my mind, will, and emotions to Jesus and the Truth. I refuse and resist any interference from Satan in this prayer time.”

The throne is a safe place to take those we are in prayer for. So many times, people’s situations seem too big for me to handle. I have a friend whose husband has cancerous tumors all over his spine. Another friend’s father just died from a long battle with cancer. One friend forgot how much God loves them. Another friend feels a bit lost. All of these people and their situations I can talk to Jesus about and lay them in His presence for Him to minister to their spirit.

There is nothing mystical about praying this way, it simply provides a mental picture for the verse above. God is inviting us to ask for help! What an amazing initiation.

Self Reflection:

  • Who can I take to His throne?
  • What needs do I feel overwhelmed by?
  • Does the throne of grace sound like a safe place?

Prayer:

Jesus, I come to Your throne to sit there in Your presence. I bring myself and ________ (whoever comes to mind), please fix our hearts and be with us in our situations or struggles. By Your mighty love and power, in the name of Jesus, I ask this and I bind Satan away from this prayer time. In Jesus’ name.
